Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated on the second Sunday of Easter, offers us a great opportunity to reflect on the endless love and mercy of God, a theme deeply embedded in our faith tradition. As we gather today, we remember the Risen Christ who appeared to his disciples, offering peace and the gift of the Holy Spirit.The Gospel of John, read today, tells of Jesus’ appearance to the disciples in the locked room. Thomas, who was not present, expressed doubt about Jesus' resurrection. Later, when Jesus appeared again and invited Thomas to touch his wounds, this act served not only to dispel doubt but also to demonstrate that his mercy transcends even the most profound doubts and disbelief.This account helps us understand that divine mercy is not just an abstract theological concept, but a tangible reality. Jesus' wounds are a testament to his love and sacrifice, a reminder that mercy flows from the heart of the crucified and risen Lord. This is the core of our reflection today - that Christ's mercy is inseparable from his love and his suffering.Saint Faustina, an apostle of Divine Mercy, echoed this sentiment in her visions of Christ, during which he expressed his desire for a feast of Mercy. In her diary, she conveyed Jesus' message: this feast would be a refuge and shelter for all souls, especially for poor sinners.Celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday invites us to trust in Jesus' endless mercy and to bring our weaknesses, doubts, and fears to him. We are called to be like Thomas, to reach out and touch the wounds of Christ, to find in them our own healing and redemption.Furthermore, this feast challenges us to become vessels of mercy in our own lives. As the Body of Christ, we are called to show mercy to others, reflecting the love and compassion that we have received. We are reminded of the works of mercy, both corporal and spiritual, as means through which we can extend God’s grace to others.Let us, therefore, pray for an open heart to receive God's mercy and the courage to show it to others. May we trust in Jesus' message to Saint Faustina, “I am Love and Mercy itself; let no soul fear to draw near to me, even though its sins be as scarlet.”As we continue our Easter journey, let the message of Divine Mercy resonate in our hearts and actions.
