A short reflection on our readings today, Wisdom 2:1.12-22 and John 7:1-2.10.25-30:In the first reading, we see a description of the wicked plotting against the just, seeking to harm and kill him. Similarly, in the Gospel reading, we see that the Jewish authorities are plotting to kill Jesus because they see him as a threat to their power and influence. The unjust actions of the wicked in the first reading and the Jewish authorities in the Gospel are born out of fear, ignorance and misunderstanding. Likewise, much of the hatred and negativity towards the Catholic Church in the secular media and society in our days may also be based on fear, ignorance and misunderstanding. This brings to my mind a famous quote by the great Bishop Fulton Sheen:“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”― Fulton J. SheenAs we approach Holy Week and reflect on Jesus' own experience of being misunderstood and persecuted, we are reminded that there will always be those who misunderstand and hate what we stand for as Catholics. However, we must remember that our faith is not defined by the misconceptions of others, nor is it defined by the failings of some within the Church.Instead, our faith is grounded in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who showed us what it means to love and serve others. As we follow Jesus' example, we can combat the misconceptions about the Church by living out our faith in the world with love and compassion for all.During this Lenten season, let us reflect on our role as members of the Church and how we can work to build a better understanding and appreciation of the Church in the wider society. Let us pray for those who have been hurt or disillusioned by the actions of some members of the Church, and for the strength and courage to stand up for what we believe in, even in the face of adversity. Amen. ... See MoreSee Less
